Make your films REMARKABLE.
That is—make them worthy of RAMARK (being talked about).
People can’t help but tell others about their experience when that experience made them FEEL something.
The feeling itself doesn’t matter.
It could’ve been fear, or surprise, melancholy, love, nostalgia…
Whatever!
As long as you can make your audience FEEL…
They will tell others about your film.
So the question becomes…
How to make your audience FEEL
Writing stories that evoke emotions is no easy task.
It becomes easier once you know the basic of storytelling.
Every story has three core elements:
- Character
- Desire
- Conflict
Think of your favorite film—I guarantee there is
- a hero (character)
- that wants something (desire)
- but something is standing in his/her way (conflict)
These three elements innately make your audience FEEL.
Because we can RELATE to the struggle of wanting something, but facing obstacles and road blocks that prevent us from getting it.
Why do we love watching characters struggle?
Because it’s so satisfying when they overcome their challenges.
Like anything is possible and maybe (just maybe) we can do it, too.
Turning up the dials
Now that you know the core elements of every story…
Anytime you watch a movie or a show take notice of these things.
→ Who is the story about?
→ What do they want?
→ What or who is trying to stop them?
To apply these principles in your own work make sure to:
- Make the character compelling, interesting, and unique
- The desire is STRONG
- The conflict is meaningful
Keep turning up those dials until the stakes are almost impossibly high and virtually unattainable.
The more quirky or unique the character, the more interesting they are to watch.
The stronger the desire—the more we will root for the character.
The more sinister the conflict (seemingly impossible to overcome)
The more EMOTION we will feel when the character finally defeats the boss.
That will make them go NUTS and your film REMARKABLE.
